How to Study Science for Home Education & Home Schooling

Updated: Mar 17

As a dedicated home education teacher specializing in the sciences from KS2 to IGCSE/GCSE, I've guided countless home-educated students through their science education journey. Over the years, my commitment to providing free live lessons and worksheets has been fueled by a passion for making high-quality education accessible to all. The unique challenges and opportunities of home education, particularly when preparing for GCSE or IGCSE exams, have taught me invaluable lessons about how to support students in their learning effectively.

Choosing the Right IGCSE Science Path

The IGCSE offers three distinct pathways for science students: Single Science, Combined Science, and Standard Science. Each option caters to different educational needs and goals.

Single Science blends all three sciences - Physics, Biology, and Chemistry - into a unified course, culminating in one IGCSE qualification, focusing on 33% of the whole syllabus for each 3 of the sciences. This is an excellent choice for students who wish to have a broad overview without delving too deeply into any one subject.

Combined Science, on the other hand, offers a more in-depth exploration, covering 66% of the syllabus for each science and rewarding students with two IGCSEs. This path suits students with a more substantial interest in the sciences, who may consider further scientific studies.

Lastly, Standard Science allows students to study each science individually, dedicating 100% to Physics, Biology, and Chemistry content if they choose all three, thereby earning three separate IGCSE qualifications. This is the most rigorous option and is best suited for students with a deep passion and aptitude for science. You won't need to study all three. You can opt to study 1, 2 or 3 sciences; the choice is yours.

Navigating IGCSE Coursework and Exams

One of the reasons many home-educated students opt for the Edexcel IGCSE over other exam boards is the lack of a coursework component. This makes it significantly easier for those studying outside of traditional schools, as it removes the need for the practical elements usually required, which can be both costly and complicated to arrange. However, students must still be familiar with practical scientific concepts, as these will be tested in the exams. Resources such as textbooks tailored to the Edexcel syllabus are invaluable for covering this aspect of the curriculum.

The Importance of Understanding the Basics

Regardless of the exam board or science path, a solid grasp of the basic principles is essential. Fortunately, abundant resources are available, including free YouTube videos and textbooks. It's crucial, however, to ensure that these materials align with the specific requirements of your chosen exam board, whether that be Edexcel IGCSE, GCSE AQA, GCSE OCR, or any other. The curriculum can vary significantly between boards, so matching your study materials to your exam specifications is critical.

A Strategy for Success: Topic-by-Topic Exam Preparation

Drawing from my experience as a home education teacher, I advocate starting exam preparation with questions split by topics. This approach allows students to gradually build their understanding and confidence before tackling full exam papers, which mix questions from various topics. About three months before the exam, students should begin practising with these mixed question papers to hone their skills further and prepare for the exam environment.

This study method, which I implement in my free live lessons, mirrors my broader educational philosophy: start with the basics and build up to more complex challenges. It's a strategy that has served my students well, equipping them with the knowledge and skills they need to excel in their IGCSE science exams.

In Conclusion

Home education presents unique challenges and opportunities, especially when preparing for IGCSE exams. However, home-educated students can achieve outstanding success in science studies with the right resources, strategies, and support. As a home education teacher, my goal has always been to provide students with the tools they need to unlock their full potential, fostering a love of learning beyond the exam room. Whether through free live lessons, carefully curated worksheets, or personal guidance, my commitment to my students' education remains unwavering. Together, we can navigate the path to academic success and beyond.

The books I recommend to my students vary depending on which science they choose and whether they choose single, combined or standard sciences
